A Tiger

Love,

My day

Every morning it starts out about he same way. Alarm rings at 7:30, snooze until 7:45. Cereal with soy milk, check my e-mail. I send off a quick revision to a line sheet for some people over seas. I found out that my work is requested for reproduction in a Magazine, Nice! 8am Get ready for work.

Went to work got there at 9, went over issues with some hoodies, design a few patterns, skipped my break, had something to eat at my desk 2pm. Asked to leave a half hour early so I can make it to a meeting after work with another clothing company.

5:00pm In Gastown I walk at a fast pace to the office. Had a 45 minute meeting about a hangtag. Afterward I went to shop in Gastown, got a cheque for some old work I did. Chatted for a bit and got a few new branding projects I get to develop. Went to Army and Navy to look around.

7:30 Had dinner with my parents, I was too tired and hungry to cook. Before that I went to the post office dropped of a letter for CRA, they are looking in to my freelance income from last year. Note to self get an accountant for this year's taxes. I just got another grey hair thinking about my taxes.

8:00 Home, worked on a brand presentation for yet another company. 10:00pm Finished it watched some Entourage (half hour long, it's a good episode). After the show I started working on some logo ideas from my conversation from earlier today. 11:30pm I go to Jasmine's place to visit. Come home at about 1:30 am talk to Nel for a bit on MSN. It's 2:45 right now, in about 5 hours I will wake up and do it all over again.

I gotta make sure I go to the gym tomorrow

Put in that Work

I love work wear. Back in 93, or 94 maybe even earlier I was trying hard to cop the Ben Davies, the Carhartt cotton duck blanket lined jackets. I even was into white painter's overalls. I love going to a place that sells work wear, looking at all the practical clothing makes me feel good.

Blogs

I just checked and in my lifetime I posted on 8 blogs, 2 of them (including this one) is still active. I had a couple personal blogs. One of which I totally forgotten about, it's like finding an old diary, pretty damn special. I had a music reviewing blog, a blog full of weird photoshopped pics, a blog on my old art project, I have a blog set up for my travels in Asia, and I ended my blog about work perfectly at 300 posts.

I'll be interesting to read this post in the future, if you are reading this now Vince from the future, I want to say everything is feeling fine right now.

Mighty Mouse

Apple went through a few mice before they came to the Mighty Mouse. Remember that hockey puck mouse? I dunno what they were thinking when they made that thing. Now the Mighty Mouse is a must have for me. The side force sensing buttons with expose is the shit. It makes my work flow much more efficient and it makes me feel like I was in the Minority Report. Use expose with the mighty mouse and show desktop with the hot corner is shit that I swear by.

Here is a total graphic design nerd thing. Now when people were using the old Power Macs would notice that the mouse operates slightly differently then from a PC mouse. Most people won't notice or care but if you are drawing with it all the time you will notice that the Power PC settings makes the mouse much slower and there is a different type of sensitivity. When I fully converted to Mac I had the hard time getting used to it. Now that I am on the Intel Macs, I found that the mouse speed has increased, before you had to get a freeware program to get the mouse to track faster.

Now when I get on a new Mac I make it a point to slow down the tracking cause I got used to the slower tracking speed from the old Power PC Mac's.

Man that was a nerdy post.

Last night Jazzy Jeff saved my life

Here is the question, why is it in Vancouver, if you want to go to a Hip Hop club night that you are almost guaranteed to hear one of these following songs; Hypnotize, California Love, No Digitty, Too Close or that Put Your Hands up For Detroit song.
Really? Are these club classics or something? Why after 10 or so years these songs are on rotation on a regular Hip Hop club DJ? Who was the person that thought that these are the tracks that just never dies?

Do we really want to remember Biggie for Hypnotize? Can't you play something else? You don't have to play 10 Crack Commandments, or Who Shot Ya but give me something else.

Why do they play Jay-z songs that have Ja-Rule or JD?

Can't they play, Girls, Girls, Girls, or Encore, or PSA, or Jockin Jay-Z?

I'm not asking people to play some Little Brother or Murs or Talib Kweli, just some songs that are at least current and charting, maybe something outside or the normal dated rotation that I seem to always hear.

What about John Legend's new song? T.I. has a song that went from 70 to number 1 on Billboard, isn't that something you want to play?

The rise of internet and satellite was because people were sick of regular radio. We need a new form DJ standard because frankly after dropping $15 on cover and $30 on a few drinks I'd like to hear at least one song that's not poor mash up or something from the 90's that should have been forgetten. Who is to say the public can't handle songs outside of the 2 dozen songs that you play in a night? I heard songs repeated 3 times last night, there is far too much music out there to have to repeat a song in a set. I'm not even being an elitist here, just play a nice clean set. I remember when I went to Jazzy Jeff last year, he put on the best sets that I've heard. Can't we have something that every night? Something remotely close?

At the end of the day I'll be happy if they play Flashing Lights just once when I'm at a club.

Payment

I heard this song at the end of the latest Entourage episode. Vince needs to get his game back, we want to see him ball.

I had a 12 hour work day, it's payback time for all those days where I work work 2 hours and take the rest of the day off. Those days are gone. Maybe.

Happy Birthday Nel.

The book of Vincent

My left wrist has gone through a multitude of different watches. None of them expensive, most of them I loved very much. One way or the other I managed to change up my watches cause either I would lose interest, or the watch started to not tell the time correctly, or I just fancied a new watch.

On my right wrist I went through a bunch of different simple bracelets, from wooden beads, to small black glass beads, to my current choice of 3 black plastic jelly bracelets and a braid leather bracelet that I got from MBK in Bangkok Thailand. Well recently my leather bracelet broke after 2 years of wear. It was sad, I tried to repair it but to no avail.

I'm looking for a replacement. I'm also slowly looking for a replacement for my necklace (I'll have to get into that in another post)

The trouble with photos

I know what it is that makes me love photography but I never want to get into it. It's 2 things:

1) I can frame things with my eye, I get inspired by things that I see and would like to take a picture of it. But what I take with my camera almost never looks as good as what I see in real life. I can solve this by 1. get a better camera or 2. learn to use my camera to it's fullest potential and embrace the irregularities that my simple camera's create.

2) Uploading images to my hard drive is a hassle, sizing them down for the web is a hassle, the pictures take up space in my computer and it makes me feel that with each batch of photos that I take with ever increasing megapixled up images that it's taking up space. A picture of a random cloud or a marshmallow can be space for a design or a big photoshop project.

3) I guess there is a third thing, this is my inability to divert my attention from graphic design. Taking the time out to learn how to take proper photos eats up my time in honing my craft in being a better graphic designer. I also feel that the knowledge from photography takes up mental space in my mind which I should really be using for graphic design.

I tend to like the fact that I can take imperfect photos that's all my own. I mean lots of people can take perfect well lit white balenced perfectly focused pics, do i need to be another one?

Don't let me get into video.

Vodka

To go along ith Nel's post, I'm drinking Bolthouse Farm's Prickly Pear Lemonade, I think it would taste pretty good with vodka. To me anything would work with vodka.

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade...and put vodka in it.

Closing in...

I feel like my days as a freelance are ending. Oct 15th is closing in on me and I once again will be a working stiff looking forward to the weekends. Having a stable paycheck would be a nice change. I don't think I'm as productive as I could be working freelance.

The fall weather is here in full force. Man I miss summer, I miss hot summer nights. I think I should move to California.

I weighed myself the other day and I am the heaviest I have ever been at 187 pounds. I can stand to lose 10 pounds.

Man this is life.

Story of the Swoosh

I remember hearing about the story about how the Nike Swoosh came to be and how much it cost Phil Knight to get the logo done. This is what I found online:

The Nike 'Swoosh' logo cost just $35 (equivalent to $184 today #).

It was designed by graphic design student Carolyn Davidson in 1971 and for her services she charged $35 at a rate of $2/hour.

Phil Knight, the company's co-founder, repaid her in 1982 with a gold Swoosh ring and an unknown amount of Nike stock.

I've been working on a lot of logos lately. It seems that a lot of people don't put as much worth on a logo as they should.

It got me thinking about this story of the swoosh. To be honest I don't think I would have charged too much more then what Carolyn charged for the swoosh (not the $35 but the equivalent of $185)

I have a lot of little stories with my personal connection with the Nike brand. Here's one that relates to my life in graphic design.

About 6 years ago, I managed to get an interview for a graphic related job, good new. Bad news is I don't know how to use illustrator...at all. So what did I do, I crammed, I got last minute tutoring, I tried to get as much knowledge on illustrator as I can in 24 hours (maybe it was a few hours less then 24 hours). One of the things I did was to practice tracing a logo, that logo being the Nike Swoosh. Needless to say what I traced was not very stellar. It was my first foray in graphic design.

I went into the interview the next day and took the illustrator test they got set up, needless to say I failed and it took me over an hour and a half to fail it. I managed to get into the art department a few months afterwards, this time it was to take care of their paperwork. I dabbled in prepress work and got trained slowly but surely. About a year later I managed to retake that illustrator test and complete the whole thing in 9 minutes.

I have yet to redraw the swoosh...I guess until now.

Joe Fresh

I bought some desert boots from Superstore today. I like their Joe Fresh line, I always make it a point to check out what they got. I ended up buying a couple pairs of shorts during the summer.

I've been wanting a pair of desert boots for a while, I almost bought a pair while I was in New York. Actually I almost bought a grey pair right before I went to Vegas.

These were dark brown, not really my color but at $40 I couldn't pass it up. The part that sold me was the thin crepe sole. I don't think it'll last long but it does give it a poor man's Opening Ceremony look.

Another day another pair of kicks
