These days I feel really blessed. I was thinking about this while I was riding my bike tonight. I'm able bodied, I am able to enjoy my time going for a walk or go for a bike ride. I get to do what I love for a living and I have a lot of opportunities open to me. I have someone I can think about before I go to bed at night. My family is healthy and I have a fat little cat to take naps with. Thank you for some of the best days of my life.

I can't seem to get more then one thing done a day. Granted that one thing I do is usually really good. But I can't switch my mind to another project, I did that while I was working full time but I find it hard while working independently. I think it's because I like to mentally prepare myself for a project the day before, so after I finish whatever I was working on that day I can't work on the next thing knowing that I did not mentally prepare myself.

I have a new plan I'm going to try out tomorrow. I'm going to start an evening work schedule where I start work at around 9 or 10. Let see how that's going to work out.

Looks like for the third time in my life I will be taking a break from the 9 to 5. This time it wasn't something that I had planned. The faster you go up the faster you fall down. I'm not sure what my future is going to be like. Right now, I have some time to think about what I need to do going forward. I actually know, I always knew, I just have the time to work towards it now.

15 Minutes

An average person life span is about 36,813,600 minutes. Out of 365 days in a year, can you afford to take 15 minutes do something positive for yourself? People are always saying I'm too busy, I don't have enough time, I'm juggling a million things. "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" 15 minutes, that is the first step.

What is 15 minutes? Half a sitcom, 3 commercials, 4 songs on the radio, a short drive somewhere, out of 24 hours in a day you can spare 15 minutes, if you can not you are just not trying hard enough.

I tried approaching various tasks with this 15 minute technique, I spent 15 minutes on cleaning up my place, 15 minutes reading a book I don't want to read. (After 15 minutes I would stop. Because I know that if I made it into one hour thing I would start making excuses to not do it) You would be surprised how much you can potentially get done in 15 minutes. Because after 6 days you have spent an hour and a half working on a project that you didn't want to start.

I have met a lot of people that would say, "I don't know what I want to do for my career I don't know about my future" they are often working a dead end job, of just a job that they really don't like. They would rather spend 40 hours a week working somewhere that makes them unhappy then to sit down for an hour to think about how they could do to find a career that makes them happy. An hour, you might not get it right away but maybe, I know this sounds crazy but maybe the next week you can spend another hour to flesh out how you can find a career that makes you happy.

It's that simple, for anybody that is lost and don't know what to do with their life, sit down, spend 1 hour really think about your goal in life. After that spend 15 minutes everyday to put yourself closer to that goal. If I was a high school councillor that is the first thing I would say to my students before they graduate.

I'm like a lot of late 20 early 30 year olds. Couldn't afford kicks as a kid, bought way too many pairs in 2002-2006. Got into white tees, dark selvage denim and vans, after owning almost every color of authentics now I'm a Jcrew poster boy. Fiending over Alden longwings and Quoddy camp sole mocs. It's a natural progression and I am riding that wave one hiked up rolled pant leg at a time.

I've been waiting to be excited about a technical shoe for a long time. I think I found it in the Air Max 2009. I am super late in discovering it, but I can say that looking at it I know people can't make a vulcanized sole rip off of it, there is a ton of technology behind it and it actually looks really good. I swear that the pics online don't do the shoe justice. I'm glad technical shoes are back, and we are back in the business of making new classics.

I'm trying to do one big project a year, well big in my terms, still can't really talk about that I did last year even though it's starting to show up in magazines. I'll talk about it when I have the production versions in my hand.

My goal last year was to do some public speaking, I kinda of did it by piggybacking onto Matt's Pecha Kucha talk.

I'd like to figure out a way to get into Computer Arts, that's been on my mind lately.

I'll set up sometime this weekend to access what my goals are this year.

I tell you one thing I definitely would like to beat at least double what I made in freelance last year.

1. I am not afraid to admit that I cried during the voice over intro of the 2010 Winter Olympic games. Human achievement really gets to me, when I see people achieve great goals it makes me teary eyed.

2. Free mixtapes are so prevalent, a lot of them are more exciting then regular albums. I think it's the DIY attitude that makes it fresh. Make music, give it away, make your money by performing live, I think that's the way to go

3. I'm more motivated lately. I started drawing a few things, and I think I finally found my style. Not bad it only took me 7 years.

4. I remember the day when I said, tomorrow my life is either going to go one of two ways. If I get this job doing paperwork for this art department my life is going to change. If I don't get that job I'll continue to look for an accounting type job.

5. I remember looking at a window of design books and wanting to be a part of that so badly, I felt my heart ache that day. Today if I look at that same store window my heart would ache a little less.

6. When I was 11 I had a dream to have one nice t-shirt to wear for everyday of the week.

7. This plan of not buying any clothes for February has been good, I've been spending less time obsessing over clothes and shoes. Instead I've been thinking about my career more.

8. I sleep at 2:30am normally, I wake up at 7:30am, I get to work at 9:00am. So I average 5 hours of sleep a night. I am a morning and a night person. Jasmine is a night person that must have 8+ hours of sleep. What that means is she takes epic naps.

9. One of my strongest traits as a graphic designer is my understanding of psychology.

10. If someone approached me with a design project, before my conversation is over with that person I would already have an idea of what I would like to develop. I attribute this to my mentality of always be inspired, or always seek inspiration. Why do you think I only get 5 hours of sleep a night.

Modern Warfare 2, it's nice to past the time in the winter playing video games.

Carcasonne, I love playing boardgames with Jasmine, listening to The XX, and having a few cups of tea. Nerdy boardgames are getting really popular, they sell them at Chapters now.

Engineered Garments, man what beautiful garments. I recently got a 19th Century Chambray, I love it. I think this is the only piece that I can afford.

Tactical Flashlights, just started doing research on them, pretty interesting. I swear there is an obsession for everything out there.

Dress Shoes, Aldens, Edward Green, Allen Edmonds, what nice shoes, man I should have gotten into them a long time ago. I recently took all my Nike's out of my regular rotation and I've been wearing my Vans less and less. I guess I'm getting old.

Ties, I recently picked up a few ties from Brooks Brothers and I learned how to tie a bow tie, kinda. Again I am getting old-er.

Okay my goal for February is to not buy any clothes.

I really like Designing Design by Kenya Hara. I really like it.

Looking forward to the next Apple announcement, I can't wait to watch the keynote.

Damn busy at work, good busy, but exhausting.

I think I figured out my style for illustrations, it feels good. It took me a while but I think I got it now.

I watched Up in the Air, I don't want to be 50 and be obsolete. Trust me I won't.

Limits Of Control

I just finished watching "The Limits of Control". By the end of the movie I found that I really liked it, it was hard to sit through at points but about a half hour after the movie I started to really think about the film and started to look up information about the movie. I ended up finding this website that delves into the film more, this site is just about the film. I didn't know Christopher Doyle was the DOP, the movie was shot beautifully.

Although it's not related, watching this movie made me feel like I was watching Last Night at Marienbad, I guess had same type of surreal experience watching it.

Place and Time

The other day I realized that I haven't done a personal project for myself in year it's probably close to two years. To be honest if it's a truely personal project it can be pushed back to 3+ years cause everything I design, draw or create is for someone, for a certain purpose other then what I ultimately would want. Aside from truly personal projects I haven't worked on a daunting side gig in well over 6 months. Speaking of which this project I worked on I will probably be able to talk about it in October of this year. I've been taking it easy, after work because my day job has become very challenging and I try to spend all my time and energy in doing that. I guess I haven't pushed myself in a long time, 6 months long. I recently took on a small project, I have about a week to produce something. I'm excited because tonight I figured out what I'm going to do. It's a new year time to start losing some sleep.

By Far the most played album, I've listened to it about 40 times this year.

Okay I just checked I actually listened to Blueprint 3 about 60 times this year. But "So Far Gone" is still my number 1 choice. I swear I must have listened to Drake's mixtape a lot more then 40 times.

I find myself talking differently now. Well at times I do. Sometimes when I speak about a certain subject I surprise myself that I actually know this and everything I'm saying is making sense. I attribute it to my attention to my surroundings, I seem to pick up on key things being said, something I stumbled on the web, noticing how a company runs and I can use that in a future presentation or just a conversation. I'm more analytical.

I also noticed that I haven't drawn in a long time. I haven't designed anything organic. Has my mind shifted, or did I come to realize what I have been lying to myself about? Do I believe this lie so much that it's become real in a fake reality? Somehow I am not afraid of it crashing down because I don't believe it ever will. Maybe it isn't a lie at all and it is real.

I know one thing for sure, I've grown a lot in the past year.

We have a mish mash of tastes, some of us care about our future, some don't think about it. We are all bunch of grown up kids, we have the Peter Pan syndrome and just don't want to grow up. A lot of our peers have great corporate jobs, have a condo, married or getting married, have kids or planning to have kids. Most of us don't have any of these things and some of us hardly think about it. We sometimes do bad things, and we would congratulate each other for doing bad things.

I take pride that I'm not a wholesome person, I like that I am sometimes a degenerate, I like that make irresponsible decisions, I like that I can be self destructive. Well maybe I shouldn't speak for my friends, but I'm definitely happy being an outcast.

Motivation

I am always weary of saying anything negative to a person. Especially someone in my profession. First of all I whole heartedly believe that you should treat people the way you like to be treated. So I don't like negative statements made towards me, I would avoid doing that to others. The second reason is, negative statements often generate a great deal of motivation.

For me I know that creatively, if someone said I'm no good at something or put me down I would be out for revenge. I will try my best to prove that person different, and I'll never let that go.

So if I said a negative statement to someone I would think that I am giving then a surge in motivation to prove me different. Not all people would react this way, but the hungry ones that's just the jump start that they need to perform at a higher level.

So watch what you say, or sometimes you have to say what needs to be said and be the asshole to motivate someone. I guess that's why silence is golden, because it's easy and hard at the same time.

The notion of home is interesting.

It's been a while since I wrote a regular post. Maybe i don't have as much to say? That might be it. I can't for the life of me go to sleep at a decent time.

The weather has been nice, I haven't been outdoors (in Vancouver) this much in a long time. I guess it's because of my new bike. I knew that getting a new bike will help me get into biking again. When I was younger I was really into BMX bikes, I would have this long wish list of parts I wanted, I would update it all the time and refine it. I never ended up getting my dream bike, I had something that was good enough, which I loved mind you. I ended up riding that BMX up until last year, I retired it after 18 or so years of riding it. I went through a phase of fixing up old banana seat bikes, I had about three. I left one of them in the alley to give away last year. I found it sitting outside a neighbors year a few days ago, someone then took it for a joy ride, it's a shame to see it go out like that.

So I have a new bike, but it's a bit small for me. I'll upgrade, I'm saving a part of my freelance money to get a new bike, it probably won't happen soon, but I can wait.

Pecha Kucha

Well I'm not normally very humble but I gotta say I was the most ordinary guy out of the bunch of presenters at Pecha Kucha. I pretty much just got on because I was tagging a long with Matt. Matt killed the crowd with laughter. I screwed up on my first slide but the rest was decent, I even got some good laughs.

I must say it feels nice to accomplish this, from the days where I have problems talking to sales people to now speaking in front of 500 people, feel pretty good. I also feel so relieved that it's all over. I wish I can do more public speaking.

Going to Mexico tomorrow. When I get back it'll be a nice fresh start. I'll post a long version of my part at Pecha Kucha in a later post.

55-year-old Peijia Wu, from Shandong province, allegedly took three months to build his DIY wooden bike. It features no metal parts whatsoever – joints are fixed with small wooden bungs and a rod-crank system has replaced where the chain would normally be.

I've been busy lately.

I seem to have quite a few things on my plate right now. I'm going away at the end of the month and it seems like I have a number of things due culminating right around the time I leave. The funny thing is this kind of stuff seems to always happen to me.

Here are a few things I have to get done before I leave.

1. Taxes
2. Present at Pecha Kucha
3. Complete a painting for this group show
4. Finish a presentation for my full time job
5. Finish Finale SS09

I just finished an intense season at my work, people say that it's the fastest we've ever finished a season and it has been one of the strongest the company has seen.

Been getting really exhausted lately, I am sure that when I go away it would be a nice release from all this work.

It's been a while since I made a regular post. I'm not sure why, I guess I just wan't feeling it for the last while. I wanted to make a post about my Blackberry but i've had it for a month now so I guess I don't really need to make a post about it.

Right now I'm reading "Pattern Recognition" I thought I would like it more.

I'm also listening to books on tape right now. I guess I'm trying to maximize my intake literature.

I'm trying to tidy up for 15 minutes a day. It didn't really work out today.

Posting pictures online should take as less effort as possible really, it's easy enough, but not easy enough at the same time.

Steve jobs has to leave his position at Apple temporarily for health reasons. Gizmodo did a post about some memorable Stave Jobs quotes. I jacked it for my blog, it was a pretty good read.

But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30, I was out."

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up, so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying, because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now.

This was the closest I’ve been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma–which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called “The Whole Earth Catalog,” which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960’s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: It was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of “The Whole Earth Catalog,” and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

I should have posted this earlier. But I was promoted to Manager of Graphic Design just before Christmas. It was a nice surprise, I got a raise and an extra weeks holiday. I gotta say I noticed the difference in my attitude shortly after I got the title. I feel responsible for all aspects of my department where as before I really just worried about my own work for the most part. Essentially I was doing somethings outside of what my job description was when I was a Senior Graphic Designer.

I recently recruited someone I gotta say that was something new.

Today I introduced a few new policies and standards, it was interesting to see things changed by my suggestions.

All in all I have never felt so accomplished in my whole life. It feels great. I feel like I can take a rest stop in my career and just chill as a manager for now.

Tomorrow is my three month probation, I guess they're going to keep me.

Utilitarian Footwear

I recently found a new love for utilitarian footwear. Traditional footwear that has worked for ages for people. It started recently when I bought a pair of inexpensive shearling moccasins. Since then I got it, these shoes have been produced for years and years and they are tried and true. They are breathable (because it's all natural leather) and very comfortable.

I am a big fan of boots (even though I hardly wear them because I love wearing sneakers too much) but because of the snow I have been wearing a pair of 10 yer old work boots from back in the day. I must say I am impressed with them, they are waterproof, they have a steel toe and I am protected from electrocution.

From the ongoing snowfall I went into researching things like snow boots and gum boots. Again footwear that has been around for years and years, they both have their own particular purpose and history. I mean a pair of $12 gum boots will protect my socks from this puddle why didn't I get a pair earlier (I actually still don't have a pair because they are sold out), I mean I can get a pair and own them for life. Snow boots that protect me from arctic temperature, they keep my feet dry and they have gators to protect my jeans, they cost less then Jordans, why didn't I get a pair earlier. Again I can get one pair and have them for life.

Pretty much all the footwear I mentioned Hiroki Nakamura from Visvim pretty much made his own version of it. Snowboots, workboots, moccasins, mountaineering boots, vans, cucks, he pretty much remade all the shoes and silhouettes that I like right now and freaked them in his style. Pretty much if his shoes weren't $300+ a pop and hard to find I can just have one of each of his shoes and I'll be good.

I gotta say I am going to be ready for next years snowfall. Snowboots, Rain boots for the winter spring, moccasins for the summer months I'm going to be good.

Here are my top 5 albums of this year. In no particular order:

Kanye West "808's and Heartbreak"

The only album that I actually went out and bought the CD. It now sits on my desk while I listen to the mp3 rip on my iPod endlessly. I was surprised how much I ended up liking "Robocop". I do miss rapping Kanye though.

Ludacris "Theatre of the Mind"

This is a really good Hip Hop album, not just a good rap album a good hip Hop album. "I do it for Hip Hop" with Nas and Jay-Z, a song with Common produced by 9th Wonder, a song produced by Primo, nuff said.

Santogold

I really like this album, I didn't think I would. I really like it. I guess it was one of those years where I didn't listen to just Hip Hop only.

Feist "the Reminder"

I know this was released in 2007 but I love this album, so damn good. This is the second most played album on my iPod next to Graduation. I really love this album.

Kid Cudi "A Kid Named Cudi"

This was actually a free mixtape. I can say hands down one of the best releases this year. This mixtape is a classic, I dunno how he's going to top this with his album.

I wish I had ore obscure and interesting picks, but really I don't give a fuck, this is me. Love me or leave me alone.
